Red-Brown Pool Water

A reddish or brown tint in the water is due to iron or manganese. Iron can exhibit brown, dark red, or a black-brown color in the water. Manganese can show as a brownish-black color in the water. This can happen due to the source of the water filling up the pool or it could also be due to the erosion and or corrosion of circulation components, including the pump. Manganese may be present as a result of source water contamination or the use of certain water treatment chemicals. To remove the red-brown tint from pool or spa water, a sequestering or chelating agent is added to the water to tie up the metallic ions and reduce the possibility that they will stain surfaces. The filter should be operated to assist in removal of the suspended materials. After 24 hours the water should be retested for metals.

Scale on Pool Surfaces

Scale is a crusty white deposit that can result in the rough pool and spa wall surfaces, reduced circulation flow, and calcification of the filter media. Scale is usually dirty, giving it a grayish color. Scale on pool surfaces can cause abrasions on the users. Excess calcium hardness and poor water balance result in scale formation. Usually high pH and alkalinity with high levels of calcium hardness will result in the formation of scale. If your pool has a calcium scale (calcium carbonate) it is more likely to occur at locations where there is water evaporation or higher temperatures. Heaters can form scale because calcium carbonate is less soluble in water as the water temperature increases. This is because the heater becomes less efficient as scale forms on the heat exchangers. If it makes it way into the plumbing, the water flow can be restricted resulting in cloudy water. To prevent all of this the alkalinity, calcium hardness, pH and TDS must be brought into proper balance. Calcium hardness can only be lowered by draining some of the pool water or evaporation. That is why your calcium should always be on the low end of its proper range. (200-400) ppm. Ideal range is 300ppm.
